{"id":1464,"date":"2011-09-15T14:36:03","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T12:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/?p=1464"},"modified":"2012-03-01T17:23:01","modified_gmt":"2012-03-01T15:23:01","slug":"a-battle-to-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/a-battle-to-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"A Battle to Fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/an-idiot-or-a-hero\/\" title=\"An Idiot or a Hero?\">I wrote a post<\/a> last week about Chris Jeon, a UCLA student who decided it would be a good idea to go to Libya to fight in the revolution there, without any training or (seeming) forethought.<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised by the reaction I received; the majority of feedback I received thought this guy was more &#8220;hero&#8221; than &#8220;idiot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But it makes sense.  Chris needed a battle to fight.  And to him, it was worth a one-way ticket and possibly his life.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/renfair_sm.jpg\" alt=\"Renaissance Fair Battle\" title=\"renfair_sm\" width=\"590\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1473\" srcset=\"http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/renfair_sm.jpg 590w, http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/renfair_sm-300x127.jpg 300w, http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/renfair_sm-153x65.jpg 153w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><span class=\"disclaimer\">Photo credit:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/watt_dabney\/\">Watt Dabney<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Call To Duty<\/h2>\n<p>Why did Chris take this huge step?  <\/p>\n<p>Why do hundreds of young adults go on adventurous service trips to third world nations each year*?  <\/p>\n<p>Why has the video game series &#8220;Call To Duty&#8221; (where a player runs around shooting enemies in realistic wartime situations) been the best selling video game for the past two years?  <\/p>\n<p>Why is AirSoft gaining thousands of participants, where boys run around shooting plastic BBs at each other with more tactical gear on than many real-life soldiers?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s the Call&#8230; inside all of us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The Battle<\/h2>\n<p>I was recently reminded of a John Eldredge quote (Thanks Nate) from his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1400200393\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=warrisheph-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399373&#038;creativeASIN=1400200393\">Wild at Heart<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=1400200393&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399373\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n\u201cA man needs a battle to fight; he needs a place for the warrior in him to come alive and be honored, trained, seasoned. If we can reawaken that fierce quality in a man, hook it up to a higher purpose, release the warrior within, then the boy can grow up and become truly masculine.\u201d \u2013 John Eldredge\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>We Can&#8217;t All Fly to Libya&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>So what are men supposed to do?  I don&#8217;t recommend that we drop what we&#8217;re doing and join the latest armed rebellions around the world.  But we can do something, such as&#8230; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8230;take a wilderness camping trip with some friends.  The kind where you need to make your own campfire and find a place to put your tent&#8211;not a camping trip where you&#8217;re on campsite #228 and you get shower tokens.  (It&#8217;s okay to smell a little&#8211;it&#8217;s camping)<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;put your son through a time of <a href=\"http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/boys-need-an-initiation\/\" title=\"Boys Need An Initiation:  It Should Leave A Mark.\">initiation<\/a>&#8230; a time to serve, do some physical activity, and learn some life skills from the men in his life.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;start karate lessons.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;take a trip to somewhere in the world.  Plan little.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;join an airsoft league (it&#8217;s fun!)<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;take a huge leap of faith&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quitterbook.com\/\">quit your job<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/warriorshepherd.com\/blog\/new-generation-of-christianity\/\">follow your passion<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;serve in the armed forces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Or we can: <\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size:larger;\">&#8230;live our lives the way they were meant to be lived.  To realize that we were created to serve a higher purpose, to enter the spiritual battles in our everyday lives.  It&#8217;s not always glamourous, and not always physically dangerous.  But no matter where we are, we can live our lives prepared for battle. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Now that I think about it, I realize that last statement is basically the theme of this blog.  But what do you think?
